Summary: In 1914 the Ulster Unionists were strong enough to fight against home rule. With the coming of wirld war one there were other things for the british government to focus on. During the war the politacal satus of ireland changed significantly, into the favour of the republicans.
The ulster unionists were opposed completely to home rule in 1914 because they wanted to stay linked with britan because its econamy was doing very well. Ulster had prospered from the Industrial Revolution and they believed that this prosperity would be lost if they accepted Home Rule as its well established links with britan would be lost. The North and south were not only seperated by there econamy, but also by culture, many of the people in the north of Ireland decended from english heritage and felt there identity would be lost and with the galic revial there had seen an uprise in irish pride, there were two different languages, types of sport and religions now residing in Ireland, if ireleand gained home rule the unionists felt everything they were trying to protect would be lost.
