Part of a Cell

Summary: Descriptions of the different parts of a cell, including the wall, the nucleus, the nucleolus, the nuclear pore, the endopasmic reticulum and the golgi apparatus.

Cell Wall: Cell walls are not found in animal cells, they provide for the cell a rigid boundary that protects the cell and gives the cell its shape. It is found outside the cell's membrane and is made primarily of cellulose, proteins, and various other carbohydrates. Along the cell wall there are pores that allow for the import and export of molecules.

Nucleus: The nucleus is the most prominent structure in a cell. It protects the cell's genetic information (DNA). It controls nearly all of the cell's functions and is the site for DNA to transcribe into RNA. Inside the nucleus there is a jelly-like substance called nucleoplsam the serves much the same purpose as a cell's cytoplasm.

Nucleolus: The dense area inside the nucleus is the nucleolus and it serves as the site for the production of ribsomes.
