The Post-World War II era was a crucial time in American history during which myriad attempts to desegregate blacks and whites in various aspects of life, such as in education and transportation, actually prevailed. That is not to say that this time period, from the 1940s to the 1960s was the only time in which blacks fought assiduously to acclaim their rights as citizens of the United States; in fact, as Liva Baker recognized in her essay "Desegregation the School," there were attempts dating as far back as to the 18th and 19th centuries; these efforts were made by blacks for the country to embrace equality as a privilege to be enjoyed by all Americans, regardless of race.
