Plot Summary and Themes in "The Red Badge of Courage"
The Red Badge of Courage by Steven Crane is set in the time of the Civil War. The regiment is either in the woods of the south camping or in the clearings fighting various battles together. It is mucky and miserable.
The main characters in the story are all Union Troops within a single regiment. The author only refers to the main character as the Youth, you later find out that his name is Henry. He is a young man about nineteen and joined the army because he wanted to be a man and liked the idea of being a soldier.
