Comparison of Methods Used Petrie and Schliemann
In 1868, amateur archeologist Dr Heinrich Schliemann (1822- 90) set out on a self-funded expedition, to disprove the common belief that Homer's Troy existed only in the pages of the Odyssey and Iliad. Once in Turkey, by examining crop marks and with close reference to the Iliad, Schliemann concluded that the mound Hissarlik was a likely location for the ancient city. As Schliemann had no education in the art of archaeology he decided to go to Paris and study for two years before proceeding with his dig.
