Georgia Counties
Polk County was founded in 1851 and was named after President James K. Polk. James was often referred to as the first "dark horse." He was the Eleventh President and served from 1845-1849. Union County was founded in 1832 and it was named after Legislator John Thomas. He was the county's first representative. Marion County was founded in 1827 by General Francis Marion. Known as the "Swamp Fox," Marion rebelled against the British in South Carolina. My last county, Rabun County was founded in 1819 by Governor William Rabun. He was a representative and senator in the Georgia legislature, and was president of the senate in 1817.
