Alienation on Teens by the Media
Summary: Media advertisements can increase feelings of alienation among teen-agers because of thoughts that they don't measure up to the ideals of beauty portrayed in the ads. Health and fitness ads are cited as examples.
The thought of being left out or alienated is a constant worry in human society, especially in the lives of teenagers. Dictionary.com defines "alienation" as "emotional isolation or dissociation." The mass media takes full advantage of this weakness that we all have. The type of media that I personally find uses this tactic most are ads found in women's magazines. Through seductive poses, threats of not "fitting in", and claims that you could be better; many teens are hypnotized into paying even more attention to these ads.
When you open one of these magazines, chances are that the first thing you see is a model posing for a new advertisement. Though looking quickly the pose may seem innocent enough, there are usually suggestive details of a sexual nature. The sight of the models in these ads tend to leave many teenagers, girls in particular, with a feeling...
