In the 14th century, trading with Asian countries was becoming a hard task and lands were being discovered and conquered. The Portuguese were leaders in the European field of exploration for they made major discoveries in the advancement in nautical technology shaping and guiding the way in the discovery of the new world.
Prince Henry The Navigator started Portugal's ventures to other lands. In order for him and his brother's to gain their knightly spurs, they needed to fight and win in battle. The only setback was they were at peace with their neighboring countries, such as Spain. The brothers did not want combat, for there was the chance of death, so they searched for detours to knighthood. Prince Henry thought it would be in Portugal's best interests to expand its borders.
