The election of 1860 brought shock upon the South when they learned a northern republican was to take office. They felt dishonored and cheated because Lincoln was not even in some Southern balances. They felt that Lincoln was sure to abolish slavery and ruin the South's way of life. The South felt, had Douglass or Breckenridge won the election, slavery was to thrive and spread in America.
