The History of Dances

We often think of ballet as pink tutus and the stereotypical dancers, girls with pencil-thin figures and pale skin, but there is more to this graceful dance than we think. Ballet is the oldest and youngest of all dance. The first professional ballet dancers performed about 300 years ago. This dance is the only art whose foundations amateurs and royal amateurs laid. French courts put on ballets the way our own ancestors may have put on theatricals or played charades. Royal dancers included two French Kings: Louis 13th and Louis 16th. Amateur ballet dancers were men and men in masks playing women's roles. The first female dancers performed professionally in a theater production in 1681. The ballet was titled Le Triample de l'amour. The first professional ballet, featuring men and women, was entitled, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme in Chambord, France.
