The Westernization of Russia
Summary: The reigns of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great transformed Russia into one of the greatest powers of Europe by expanding its territory and completely westernizing its culture.
Peter the Great, also known as Czar Peter 1, was the ruler of Russia for many years. During his reign, one of his main goals was to completely westernize Russia and he did this in many different ways, both culturally and politically. Catherine the Great took the throne shortly after in 1762. She continued what Peter would have done if he was still alive by carrying on his legacy and using her great power. Together, they transformed Russia into one of the greatest powers of Europe by expanding its territory and completely westernizing their culture.
One of the very first things Peter the Great did was to develop Russia throughout the western European boundaries. Using France as a model, he completely restructured the army, equipped with better and powerful weapons and waged war against Sweden.
