The Analyst
Summary: A descriptive overview of the short story "The Analyst," about a middle-aged man on the verge of committing suicide and the so-called "village idiot" who unwittingly saves him. The theme of the story is how in our selfishness, we are blind to the suffering of others.
The story begins with a middle-aged man named Andrew on the verge of committing suicide. Just before pulling the trigger on the gun in his mouth, he spots a man starring directly at him with a blank look on his face. The warmly-dressed stranger was a mentally challenged man named Virgil. When he greeted Virgil, Andrew recognized who he was immediately. Virgil was well-known throughout the town as the village idiot, the end product of four generations of inbreeding. Nevertheless, they become what Andrew believes to be friends and spend time together. Each day, Andrew picks Virgil up from the park and gives him a ride to his destination. Andrew tries to hold in-depth conversations in the car, which are always about himself, but Virgil seems to only be concerned with the weather and whether or not it will rain.
