Avi Wortis was born December 23, 1937 in New York City. Avi has a twin sister whom at the age of one started calling him Avi; he hasn't gone by another since and will not tell his true name. In Avi's life there were two main parts that inspired his writing. First, Avi didn't do well in academics so he wanted to prove to his family that he could write. Secondly, Avi's inspiration to write children's books came from the birth of his first son. His first book, Things That Sometimes Happen, was published in 1970 as children's literature.
