The Origin of Aestheticism

Summary: An overview of the origin of aestheticism, which emerged out of artists' resistance to the utilitarian approach of the English bourgeoisie. Initiated by the French writer and poet Théophile Gautier, aestheticism was pushed forward by the noted critics Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the capitalists were fighting for the possessions of the colonies fiercely and had been in conflict for many years. The fierce complicated conflict, internal, generated the ideological crisis of capitalism. At that time, the rapid development of the capitalistic industries fostered the vogue of the materialism, utilitarianism and the art tended to be more and more commercialized. The English bourgeoisie rejected the pleasure-seeking values of the aristocracy. They were in favor of new virtues related to hard work and simple pleasures. At the end of that century, some dissatisfied writers and artists, confronted with the reality of the commercialization of the art, felt that great art was no longer possible in England because the country had grown materialistic and unjust, and that their ideals were destroyed by the cruel realities.
