SGT. William Harvey Carney

William Harvey Carney is well known through the military world, especially to the African Americans in the armed forces. Through tough odds and courage Carney was the first African- American union army sergeant and first African American to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This medal is only giving to those who display their braveness honor and courage. Carney earned this through leadership courage and respect for his men.

Before being known as SGT. William H. Carney, Carney was just known as William H Carney Jr. he was born a slave on March 28, 1842 in Norfolk, Virginia. Very little is known about his early years in life. Although he was interested in Ministry early, he attended a school under the teachings of a local minister. Later he escaped slavery through the underground railroad with his father to New Bedford Massachusetts. Carney...
