Summary: Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare is a tragic play about one man's quest to find the truth as well as defy the constraints of his fears. In The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin, Edna makes tough decisions that will ultimately lead to her death. Even though Hamlet and Edna lived at different times in society, their plight is similar.

Trapped inside a void of absolute mercy to society's ravenous claws, the protagonists must fight to obtain freedom. Freedom from these voids would mean death to them, however, through their heroic efforts they believe in their purpose in life and are fueled by the drive of determination.
