Oedipus Rex and Creon Comparitive Essay

Summary: Oedipus and Creon are both very similar leaders. They are loved by the people and also are feared. They each had many great positive traits such as Oedipus' knowledge or Creon' caution yet they also had many negative character traits like Oedipus and Creon's overbearing arrogance and unwillingness to change.
Throughout the play Oedipus Rex and Antigone, Sophocles is able to demonstrate that the characters Oedipus and Creon are both similar in many ways such as they both have an immeasurable amount of loyalty and admiration for the city of Thebes. They are both depicted as great leaders, who have won the respect of the people they rule. Their negative qualities however lead them to a similar tragic fate. In the plays Oedipus Rex and Antigone, Oedipus and Creon had come to rule in somewhat similar situations, ruled in similar ways and shared the character trait of head strength which led to their ultimate downfall. On one hand, Oedipus is passionate and takes on the people's problems as his own; however he has an over-abundant sense of self worth, which ultimately contributes to his downfall.
