The diaphysis is the shaft and it's made up of compact bone, and it is covered by periosteum that provides protection. The epiphyses are the ends of the long bone. It has a thin layer of compact bone that encloses spongy bone. Articular cartilage provides protection and reduces friction at the joints because it is composed of hyaline cartilage, which provides a smooth and slippery cartilage. The epiphyseal plate is a flat plate of hyaline cartilage which is mostly found in young and growing bone. Epiphyseal plate causes the bone to grow lengthwise. As a person grows, the epiphyseal line is completely replaced by bone and there are only the epiphyseal lines to tell where they previously existed.
