In his article, The Déjà Vu Illusion, author Alan S. Brown discusses the odd experience of déjà vu. Brown also discusses some different theories that offer an explanation of this phenomenon; these theories include biological dysfunction, divided perception, and implicit familiarity without explicit recollection. Along with these theories, Brown discusses some possible directions to head in for future research concerning déjà vu.
To begin, Brown states that the déjà vu illusion is, "one in which there is a jolting confrontation between our subjective sense of familiarity and our objective evaluation of unfamiliarity." Brown then goes on to explain that the phenomenon of déjà vu occurs mainly in younger people who travel frequently, and who often remember their dreams. Déjà vu is also tends to occur indoors more often and when a person is relaxed.
