As the title suggests, in "Second Glance at a Jaguar", Hughes returns to an isolated jaguar held captive behind bars in a zoo, and revisits several ideas he first put forward in his poem "The Jaguar" written ten years previously. The word "glance" used in the title of the poem is somewhat ironic, as the poem does not proceed to describe a quick momentary glimpse of the jaguar, but launches into an in depth portrayal of the effects of incarceration on the jaguar, lingering on rather severe changes the animal has undergone due to it's caged circumstances. In contrast to the first poem, Second Glance at a Jaguar focuses, in one continuous stanza, solely on the Jaguar, paying little attention to its environment and none to the other animals housed in the zoo.
