The Control and Management of Feral Horses in Australia's National Parks
The Australian Feral Horse or "Brumby" each year cause huge amounts of damage to native flora, creating a controversial Land Management issue. Brumby's remain free of any native predator and with a population of approximately 300,000, that grows by 20% each year, the damage they do, particularly in the National Parks Kosciusko and Guy Fawkes, which are already weakened by bushfires and drought, cannot be controlled without, at least, their partial removal from the parks. Brumbies have played a unique part in Australian history, from the epic tale of the Male from Snowy River, and their decent from the Walers, the horses used by the Australian Cavalry in WWI.
