Evidence found throughout Deir El Medina indicates its inhabitants lived a privileged life, compared to those in the remainder of Egypt. The artefacts found give us a detailed historical recount of the common people, their beliefs, interests, lifestyles, conflicts and everyday life. Deir El Medina is one of the world's richest sources of archaeological and written evidence covering the live and routines of Egypt's inhabitants. Over 1500 literary works alone have been found enabling archaeologists to make assumptions on the ancient civilisations lifestyles.

The remains of the city show the town was well structured and planned, surrounded by a large wall that was religiously guarded to protect the people from surrounding enemies. The inhabitants of Deir El Medina were there with a single purpose, to construct the tombs for the Pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings.
