The Meuse-Argonne Forest battle was possibly the greatest American battle of World War I. It could certainly be considered the most important battle, because it proved to be the turning point of the war. If the Meuse-Argonne Battle had been lost, the Allies probably would have lost the war. The battle began on September 26 and lasted till November 11, 1918. It was a very complex operation involving a majority of the AEF (American Expeditionary Forces) ground forces fighting through rough, hilly tree covered terrain. What made it even more difficult was the fact that the Germans had occupied the area for almost four years and had fortified it for defense. The battle was a well-planned operation.
