Stamford Raffles was a visionary person. He laid out the groundwork and basis of Singapore's progress and had the foresight to see Singapore's potential as a trading centre. His mastery of Malay helped in his talks with the locals. He spearheaded the signing of the treaty to establish a trading post in Singapore with the Sultan of Johore's older brother, and recognised Singapore as the best place at the south of the Malay Peninsular for a British base, managing to convince the British governing India to let him set up a new factory in Southeast Asia.
