Authors use many different approaches to grasp a reader's attention, whether they do it through plot, character, theme, setting etc. they do it well. James Patterson is a good example of an author who is able to capture a reader's attention. He uses shock to seize the reader. He continues on to leave them on the edge of their seat to see what's coming next. He does so in Four Blind Mice, The Lake House and Roses are Red. All three are great novels, well written and keeps the reader wanting more.
