Utopianism: To Dream of Perfection
Summary: A basic overview of some of the key concepts and history of the philosophy of utopianism, which rose to prominence in the Industrial Revolution. Spearheaded by the work of intellectual idealists such as Robert Owen and Charles Fourier, utopianism emphasized the belief that social and economic perfection, including freedom from the unnatural bonds established by the new industrial order, was attainable.
The history of mankind is punctuated with epochs of change and awakening. One such period is the European Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was during this era that industrial man explored his intellect and spawned new ideological thought. The evolving relationship between man and machine gave birth to technological advancement, but unforeseen challenges as well. Numerous ideologies were derived to make sense of the changes thrust upon mankind. An ideology refers to the body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class, or culture. One such ideology that evolved during this time period was the concept of social utopianism. Utopianism refers to a form of socialism based on a belief that social ownership of the means of production can be achieved by the voluntary and peaceful surrender of their holdings by propertied groups.
