"Feet" by Seamus Deane

Summary: Seamus Deane's story "Feet" (September 1948) is told through the point of view of a frightened young boy who hides under a table while viewing the death of his sister. Deane's use of character, setting, and style help to develop this character as he reacts to the dread he feels from the harsh reality of death.

Seamus Deane wrote "Feet" (September 1948) which is in Reading in the Dark (1996), this is a story which talks about the troubled mind of a boy. Seamus Deane uses first point-of-view to get a greater intimacy with the character which is very important since he is hiding under the table when he is viewing the death of his sister and how she is taken to the hospital. Apart from character, the setting and the style of the writer helps the reader understand the troubled mind of a young narrator which does not understand the significance of death.

The use of this young boy as the narrator is very important; he is describing what he sees but often gets sidetracked into irrelevant but important stories that help us understand the story better. The boy is not very mature; he talks about different illnesses making him think of "Italian football players...
