In this essay, the effects of socio-cultural forces on plays will be looked at in four different ages. The plays will namely be from the ancient Greek theatre, the Middle Ages, the renaissance and the Modern Age.
The ancient Greek theatre was held at a very volatile time when battles were rampant. They include the Ionian revolt, the battle of Marathon and the Three Battles. Disunity was rampant among the Greek states and political debates raged about whether to be an oligarchy or a democracy. This made it hard for the Greeks to even unite against outside forces. Given the chaotic times, it is surprising that the Greeks had an epitome of civilised life of political and moral thinkers of the age.
