Pol Pot was a man behind the horrific genocide, which took place in Cambodia over the four year period stretching from April 1975 to January 1979. Many lives and families were shattered as a result of Pol Pot's ostensible dream of equality within the country. Luong Ung's `First They Killed My Father' exemplifies that there is a substantial emphasis placed upon beauty and status. The importance of beauty is laced throughout the memoir. Upon Pol Pot's reign the classes of Cambodia were reformed, the new classes bear the key to survival. Luong Ung's memoir illustrates those who are unfortunate to be apart the new `lower class' during the takeover must resort to desperate measures to survive, while those apart of the communist party enjoy a first class lifestyle...
