In the novel, The Edge, by Alan Gibbons, Harry Mangam is an old man who has driven away his daughter and grandson. Residing at Edgecliff estate with his wife, Joan, they haven't seen them for years. Ever since his daughter, Cathy, has fled to London at the age of sixteen with a son of mixed-race, they've never been together as a family. Now that they're back, Harry is still unforgiving. Living in a society where racism exists, Harry is a man who is reluctant in changing his ways, but the return of his daughter and grandson drastically changes his point of view.
