The Changing Meaning of the "Alien" Reflected in Literature
Summary: The changing meaning of aliens in society and culture reflects different ideological agendas. This is discussed with reference to these works of literature: "Frankenstein," "Dracula," "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Post Mortem."
When people define the alien in their own ideologies they are also defining what they are. Defining exactly who we are creates inflexible boundaries for ourselves and is very difficult, it is more convenient to define what we are not, the alien is a creation of what know we are not. Ideologies are people's philosophies, they are the way people view the world and value what they see. As people's ideologies change their values also change which also effects their image of the "alien." The alien in society is usually someone who undermines that particular society's values. An alien may be someone who does not adhere strictly enough to a society's values, someone who does not possess many qualities valued by that society or someone with ideologies not valued by that society. The changing meaning of alien in society and culture reflects very different ideological agendas.
