Innocence Sabotaged
Summary: American society today suffers from a lack of civility. The examples of American soldiers abusing prisoners of war, Catholic priests molesting children, and school teachers manipulating and exploiting students show the degree to which individuals of authority take advantage of the innocent. These examples also show how we fail to treat one another with the appropriate degree of humility and compassion.
Civility is a seldom occurrence in American society today. We rarely treat one another with any humility or compassion anymore. Instead, our American soldiers abuse POWs, our Catholic clergy members abuse young boys and our school teachers abuse students.
American soldiers have lost their credibility in the world ever since they were accused of abusing prisoners of war. In Afghanistan, as soldiers searched for Bin Laden, suspected terrorists were captured and imprisoned only to be subjected to abuse. Two prisoners died from blunt force injuries at the hands of American soldiers. A total of twenty-six soldiers were charged in the incident. Scandals at Abu Ghraib have also surfaced. Soldiers placed hoods on detainees heads, stripped and beat them. They also put leashes around their necks.
