The Role of Art in the Greek Golden Age
Summary: During the Golden Age of ancient Greece (400 B.C.), architecture, painting and sculpture played a significant role in the society. This art represented the ideals and values of Greek civilization. The effects of this great era of art and seen in our culture today.
The prosperity and influence Athens had drew people of every kind in to the land. During the Golden Age, the period around 400 B.C, artists and teachers arrived from all over Greece to the Greek center of art and culture, Athens. All types of Greek art including architecture, painting, and sculpture shared those identical four attributes; expressed ideals of harmony, balance, order and moderation, glorified humans, combined beauty and usefulness, and symbolized pride of people in their city-states. It is by these characteristics that the art was distinctly defined. The art was the people; it represented their ideals and values in Greek civilization.
The works of Greek art mainly consisted of architecture, sculptures and paintings. Their works of architecture can be seen all over Greece today, like the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens. In our time, it is unusual to find many of the paintings and sculptures...
