Facts about Right Whales
Right Whales used to be so widely hunted because of their thick blubber. This would have been used to produce valuable whale oil which could be sold for a large prophet.
Many money making ship owners killed over 25,000 Whales. By the time that had killed all these, they were virtually extinct.
Many of the whales that the poachers had killed and not managed to take out of the water, then floated to the surface and drifted into the water fronts.
The whales fed on small creatures near the surface. They swam along with their mouths half open allowing creatures and sea water to flow in. They then pushed the water out with their tongues and left the creatures remaining.
August is the height if the whales breeding season. Every three years the female whales swim from their homes in the Antarctic to their breeding grounds off coast of Australia. The mature females weight up to eighty tonnes. Their claves weigh up to twenty tonnes. The females do not feed at all until they return to their homes in the Antarctic. This is about two months later.
