The idea of democracy began in ancient Greece. In Greek demos means people and kratos means rule, the people's rule. The Greeks were in favor of equality for all free males. Over time as the Church gained power and divine right became influential, democracy lost its grandeur. Democracy in the Middle Ages was not a very strong type of government, so it did not flourish. There is not one definition of democracy because there are many views of what democracy actually is. There is ideal democracy and there is realistic democracy.
