The Scottish highlands are a remote region in the north of the United Kingdom. Although the Highlands covers thirty-seven-thousand squared kilometres of land area in the UK, it contributes only one percent of the overall population. Urban development has led to a decrease in population density in the Highlands throughout the past two-hundred-and-fifty years. Cities such as Aberdeen and Glasgow have attracted a rural to urban migration movements. The population in the Scottish highlands face many difficulties. Because of their situation at the most northerly point of the United Kingdom, the experience fronts moving from the North Atlantic.
