Overview of the Vietnam War
Summary: Brief overview of the Vietnam War and its effect on society. Examination of the songs and posters of the time that encouraged American men to serve their country, regardless of the cost.
The Vietnam War was one of the most important wars in the 20th century. It started in 1965 when the US first sent American Marines onto Vietnamese soil. It seemed as a crusade by the Americans to help Vietnam remain free and prevent the other South Asian countries from falling to communism as well. However, as the war dragged on, news of war crimes and American deaths made the war extremely unpopular.
The American youths spearheaded this anti-war movement back at home. They were the ones that were exposed to the new culture and were extremely anti-war. This youth movement became known as the hippy movement. Throughout the war, they constantly staged protests and demonstrations, destroying the waning support of the wartime leaders. They are viewed as one of the most important factors in causing the US to lose the war.
