Development of Children's Fantasy Literature 1800-2000

Summary: The following essay will be focusing on the development of children's fantasy literature, through the discussion of the literary elements, over the period in which the five selected texts have been written. The discussion will focus on major literary elements that have changed and some that have not changed through the periods. The five works are: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Carroll, Wind in the Willows by Grahame, Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Obrien and The Giver by Lowry.
When an author portrays a story, he/she also depicts the characters, setting, style, theme and the plot within a specific time frame. In many of the fantastic novels, the authors tend to focus on the social life, and the construction of childhood at that time in which it was set. Throughout many of the fantasy literature it can be seen how not only the Victorian and Edwardian times, but also the modern times influence the way an author constructs his/her literary elements within a text. Saukkola (2001, p.7) states that what impresses readers more is how the literature is linked in so many ways to the society in which it was created.
