Late 1800s Inventions
Summary: The inventions in the late 1800s of the telephone, the refrigerated railroad car, and the light bulb significantly transformed life in America. The degree to which we rely on telephones and cell phones, the freshness and variety that we receive in our food as the result of the refrigerated car, and our daily use of electricity in light bulbs and appliances make it hard to imagine that we could ever survive today without these inventions.
In the late 1800's, the nation sees progress through the inventions of the telephone, the refrigerated railroad car, and the technology that Edison provided us about electricity and the light bulb. So just how much did this affect America? Can you imagine going for days without light, a telephone or fresh food?
The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. It was patented in 1876 and within eight years there was telephone service from Boston to New York. Many people must have saved plenty of time with the telephone. There was no longer as much need for messengers. A person could contact someone fifty miles away within minutes, rather than days. Within fifteen years there were over 1.3 million telephones nationwide. That seems astronomical for then, but consider how many phones are used today.
