Summary: In Amy Tan's story "Two Kinds," a mother and daughter disagree on the path in life the daughter should take, which leads to a confrontation between them. This analysis explores the characters, the story's setting, the confrontation itself, and the overall theme of the story.
Two Kinds Book Analysis

Characters

The mother in this story was a very loving mother, who wanted too desperately for her child to become someone special. She would look in magazines and books about talented children and try to get her daughter to do the same things. The daughter in this at first was very accepting to the ideas that her mother had at first, but as time progressed she started to understand that she wasn't being who she was, and that was what she was going to do. The piano teacher was deaf but still was very smart and knew what he was doing. The mother's sister in the story was very conceded about her little child, and child was a stubborn little snob.

Setting of Story

The setting of the story takes place in San Francisco, The mother in this story was originally from Asia. She came from there in search for a better life, and she was looking for her daughter to become the something that she always wanted. As time passed the girl become older, and her mother passed on.

Incident

The relationship between the mother and daughter was never really good. The mother in the story wanted her daughter to be someone that she wasn't. The child began to realize that as she got older, and began to dislike her mother for it. The mother and the daughter had a big confrontation about her mother forcing the child to play piano lessons, which ultimately ended in the two of them becoming distant strangers. Then finally in the end of the story the two of them tried to reunite but the mother died before the two of them squashed their differences.

Theme

The theme of this particular story was making a child do what another child has accomplished doesn't amount to anything, but being proud of your child for who they are and what they've accomplished on their own is priceless.
