The Nature of Feudal Japan
The nature of Feudal Japan was both violent and artistic. Trained warriors, the Samurai, were constantly engaged in battle, but also practiced many arts and organized religion. To say that the life led by the samurai was a simple one would be misleading; they also had a code to abide by - Bushido, or "way of the warrior."
Bushido included such ethics as respecting others, honesty, sympathy, understanding and loyalty. The code was originally shaped by Zen Buddhism, teaching the Samurai that death was an inevitable part of life, and that it should not be feared, but embraced. Dishonor and infidelity are not rewarded, self-control and sincerity are praised.
