The great depression was caused by a combination of scientific ingenuity, political and social disruption, as well as economic crises.
During the pre-depression era upper middle class families had paid servants to perform daily chores. This came to a screeching halt when companies such as general electric, Amana, and Hoover began making products to replace expensive and slow human labor.
