"the Student" and "At Least a Hundred Words"
Summary: Both Derek Power's poem "The Student" by Derek Power and Hugo Williams' poem "At Least a Hundred Words" display the perspective of students who are not fond of their studies and therefore cannot concentrate on them. While the result is the same, the students' attitudes toward studying take different forms. In "The Student," the student knows he needs to study but procrastinates due to lack of determination and discipline; whereas in "At Least a Hundred Words," the student is more mischievious and thus is always punished by his teacher.
"The Student" and "At Least a Hundred Words" are two interesting poems written from student's perspectives. They are both similar in a way that the persona, who appears to be students, are not really fond of his studies. However, in "The Student," he somehow shows himself that he is guilty and knows that he actually needs to study but due to lack of determination and discipline, he procrastinates in his work. The persona in "At Least a Hundred Words" is naturally playful and naughty. He, together with his friends, is always punished by Mr. Ray and apparently they have nothing good to say about themselves in their "letters home." These two poems bring up the subject of student's misbehaviours.
