Odysseus as a Hero
Summary: In Homer's poem "The Odyssey," Odysseus displays courage, strength, and leadership throughout his long journey home. These three traits in particular establish Odysseus as a hero.
Odysseus is a man that has many valuable traits. In the poem "The Odyssey," by Homer, Odysseus is a hero that endures a 10-year war also known as "The Trojan War." After the war, Odysseus only wants to get home, but he encounters many conflicts on the way. Throughout the journey towards home, Odysseus displays courage, strength, and leadership.
Odysseus shows his courage in many parts of the journey. The event that displayed the most courage was when Odysseus and his men were in Polyphemus's (the Cyclops's) cave. In the poem, Polyphemus captures Odysseus and his men and shuts them in his cave. Odysseus then creates a plan to defeat Polyphemus by getting him drunk, disabling his eye with a spear when he's asleep, and escaping under the sheep when Polyphemus takes his herd out for a walk.
