What Is Art?
Summary: To define art would serve to restrict some aspect of it; every person has an individual response to a work of art, making the creation of a universal definition of art problematic. As examples such as Edouard Manet, Marcel Duchamp, Jenny Holzer, and Damien Hirst display, the scope of art enlarges as artists extend its boundaries and challenge preconceived notions of what is art and what is an artist.
There is no one definition of art. Art is such a large force that any definition would restrict some aspect of it. Through numerous movements, art has become larger with artists adding and pushing the boundaries of what is thought of as art. To many, art means skill, to others it means something created by an artist, however what ever is used to define an artwork will always be opposed as there is always a piece of unusual and innovative artwork that goes against certain classifications.
In a sense art is decided by the individual. If it contributes to your experience, then it is probably art for you. Every person has an individual response to an artwork which is determined through tastes, thoughts, morals and personal experiences.
