From the onset German citizens did not look favorably upon their new democratic system. Historically, Germany has sort authoritarian rule, and looked towards a powerful assertive leader who maintains and expands the German empire and democracy was in stark contrast to this. Whilst German democracy may have started off on the back foot, initial efforts to succeed as a democratic state appeared fruitful with an extremely democratic constitution (some historians argue that it was too democratic and thus assisted democracy's downfall). Following events which occurred from 1924 including the failure of social welfare system, the continuing elitist challenge and the Great Depression which impacted Germany to a much larger extent than any other European country, democracy was abandoned as the German electorate was polarized in citizens search for an extremist alternative to ultimately restore Germany to greatness.
