The Dangers of Performance-Enhancing Drug Used in Sports
Summary: The reasons why some athletes take performance-enhancing drugs, such as steriods, include better on-the-field performance, the pressure to make money, and pressure by teammates and coaches. However, these drugs have made bad side effects such as jaundice, liver damage, mood swings, depression, nausea, headaches, dizziness, muscle cramps, rapid heart beats, overgrown limbs, heart and cardiovascular problems, ulcers, weakened bones and muscle tissue, high blood pressure, convulsions, dehydration, kidney failure, and allergic reactions.
Practically since the beginning of sports athletes have been using different types of performance enhancing substances to gain an advantage over the opposition. However these substances have come along way from the sheep's testicles that the Greeks would eat to increase their levels of testosterone thousands of years ago. Now there are so many different types of pharmaceutical performance enhancing substances being used that sports officials no longer know where to draw the line. In my opinion all pharmaceutical performance enhancers should be banned from amateur and professional sports.
Anabolic steroids, amphetamines, cocaine, diuretics, and artificial oxygen carriers are, just to name a few, pharmaceutical performance enhancers. These chemicals are taken to help the body build muscle mass and strengthen bone, mask pain, stimulate the body, reduce weight, relax, as well as deliver oxygen to different parts of the body.
