Contemporary Art
Summary: Evaluates the work and methods of contemporary artists Christo, Stellarc and Cindy Sherman. Questions each artist's intentions in the production and meaning of their artwork and the nature of their contemporary practice.
Contemporary is literally defined as meaning "living or happening in the same period of time." As such all art at a particular pint in history can be said to have been contemporary, however art critic Chris Judd states there is "a general consensus that contemporary art refers to art made after 1970." Over time contemporary art has become the umbrella word for anything that is far out or different. The result is that today the vast majority of the general public, upon hearing the word contemporary, immediately envision a creation that is "on the edge", "far out", "weird" or, at least, modern or abstract. While contemporary art also covers the more traditional and conventional of post-modern art, contemporary practices have come to include installations, performance art, and digital media, which have pushed the very definitions of what constitutes art.
