French History from the Renaissance to the Late 19th Century
Summary: A new French society was born of the 15th century Renaissance Era, which banished the hardships of the Middle Ages. The roles of King Louis XIII and XIV are discussed as well as events leading up to the French Revolution in 1789. The French Republics that followed the revolution generally failed until the Third French Republic, which lasted through World War I.
"Renaissance" translates from French to "reborn." At the start of the renaissance, the end of the 15th century, France found itself in a good position. A new king had just married and a new concept, patriotism, was strong. The Hundred Years War was over and the medieval ages were a thing of the past. France was ready to take on the new world craze and follow Europe through the renaissance.
Despite Christopher Columbus' discovery, France seemed to be more involved in a war against Italy than in the new world. Five years after the discovery, the French claimed Canada but the did not involve themselves in the South America craze. They were busy in Italy. The Italian palaces awed Francois the first and he attempted to invite several Italian renaissance artists.
