The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival has been known to be one of the most famous rock festivals of all time and certainly of its era. Woodstock was a three day festival and concert that celebrated peace and love. Woodstock was what the counterculture and hippie era of the 1960s stood for. The three day festival was held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre dairy farm in Bethal, New York on the 15, 16, 17 of August, 1969. The festival acquired its name "Woodstock" because it was originally scheduled to take place in the town of Woodstock, in Ulster County, New York. Woodstock did not take place there because of local opposition that arose; the event was almost cancelled altogether. The festival took place on the site that it did because of the persuasion of Max Yasgur's son, Sam Yasgur. Her offered to hold it on his families property.
